Webinar: Flipped teaching

Labster host webinars in which we are joined by consultant experts and real Labster first-timers to discuss a topic of interest, and invite you to listen and ask your questions.

Our most recent webinar focused on flipped teaching, an innovative alternative to traditional lectures. The basic concept of flipped teaching is that students are given teaching information before class, often online, and can then apply what they learned in classroom activities which may have traditionally been given as homework.
We were joined by Cathy Thomas-Varco, managing director of online learning resource company Mirrabook Development Trust CIC, and Dr. Felicia Vulcu, an Assistant Professor at McMaster University.
Cathy Thomas-Varco covered the what, why and how of flipped teaching, opening with what she called a controversial statement: “Higher education is less about the content you are teaching, which will often become outdated, and more about developing those skills that students are going to need going forward”.
Dr. Felicia Vulcu then guided us through her first-hand experience of ‘flipping the lab’ at McMaster University in Canada. She described how integrating Labster simulations in her undergraduate Biochemistry course allowed her to “take it to different heights” while having a lot of fun along the way.

Watch the recording below to learn:

  • What exactly is flipped teaching?
  • Why should you consider it?
  • How might you start implementing flipped teaching?
  • What do students think about it?
  • What is the evidence that flipped teaching actually works?
