About Meiosis, Mitosis and Plant Gametes (NEW) Virtual Lab Simulation

This short, targeted simulation is adapted from the full-length “Meiosis: Understand how traits are inherited” simulation.

In this simulation, you will use microscopy to study samples of lily anthers while helping the team at the laboratory. You will study the process of cell division and discover the key differences between meiosis and mitosis. 

Help Marie and her team

You will meet Marie at the laboratory where she and her team is doing a study on lily anthers to investigate the phases of meiosis, and they need your help with an experiment.

 Use microscopy to study meiosis

Jumping straight into their research project, you will prepare a sample of a lily anther for microscopy and study the phases of meiosis. You will learn how gametes are formed and how they fuse in fertilization.

Complete the interactive diagram

Then you will compare meiosis and mitosis and learn how each of these processes contributes to human reproduction. You will complete interactive diagrams of both meiosis and mitosis to create a visual overview for yourself. Will you be able to give Marie and her team the help they need?
