Cellular Respiration: Respirometry

About this Simulation

This short, targeted simulation is adapted from the full-length “Cellular Respiration” simulation.

What in the cellular respiration is Respirometry?!  In this simulation, you will learn all about respirometry and the techniques used to obtain rates of metabolism. You have been employed by the council to help the community basketball team learn about the science behind cellular respiration and metabolism. By performing the experiment on a virtual mouse, you will be able to collect all the data you need.

Respirometry

Discover the inner workings of respirometry and pick up some neat lab techniques! By injecting a mouse with a microchip, you will be able to analyze the oxygen levels, blood glucose levels and lactic acid levels of the subject after exposing it to different environmental factors. Don’t worry about hurting the mouse though! One of the many perks of a virtual simulation is that you get all the experiences and data you need during this experiment without any animals being harmed in the process!

Review your Knowledge

Throughout the experiment will be prompted with some engaging quiz questions to reinforce your knowledge to further your learning of cellular respiration, as well as coming up with a hypothesis to put to the test! To accompany the quiz questions there are relevant theory pages and informative diagrams to aid your learning.

Help athletes perform

Now you are a pro in respirometry and metabolism you will be ready to pass on your knowledge to the basketball players, so they can improve their diet and training regime to remain energized throughout the game. With this new knowledge on their bodies metabolism, they will be unstoppable!

Learning Objectives

At the end of this simulation, you will be able to:

  • Contextualise respirometry within metabolic process investigation
  • Describe the steps of an example respirometric experiment
  • Relate respiration to blood glucose levels and oxygen consumption

Techniques in Lab

At the end of this simulation, you will be able to:

  • Respirometry
