Watch Webinar: Can VR Simulations replace traditional science labs?

This academic year, Arizona State University launched three fully online courses in biology using Labster VR, all of which are at the advanced level (upper division courses).

In this webinar, Mike Angilletta, PhD, Associate Director of Undergraduate Programs at ASU and instructor for the Ecology lab course, joins us to offer some insight into what it is like to teach an online lab course using VR.

Having overseen the running of these courses, he has ensured their smooth transition into the biology department at ASU. His observations are therefore extremely beneficial to understanding the steps that are involved in running an online course. They also offer a first-hand account into what students really think about using virtual laboratory simulations as a replacement to traditional science labs and as a supplement to online course material.

In this hour-long webinar he answers the following questions:

  • What are the pros and cons of using VR?
  • How did the students respond and react to using VR?
  • Can you use VR to replace large portions of a lab course?
  • Can you have a successful science course that is exclusively online?

As well as provide a unique look into what both students and teachers think about Labster, Mike Angilletta helps us take a closer glimpse at some of the new ecology simulations that Labster has to offer.

About Mike Angilletta

Mike Angilletta, PhD, is a Professor and the Associate Director of Undergraduate Programs in the School of Life Sciences at Arizona State University. Mike studies impacts of temperature on organisms and their consequences for ecological and evolutionary processes.

His research has generated more than 100 scientific papers, but he is best known for his award-winning book, Thermal Adaptation.

At ASU, Mike oversees 9 undergraduate programs in biology that collectively enroll about 5000 students. His team launched the first online program that confers a BS in Biological Sciences. This program combines evidence-based practices and cutting-edge technology through collaborations with companies such as CogBooks, Labster, and Google.
