New Webinar and Guide Address Leak in Pre-Nursing Student Pipeline as STEM Prerequisites Weed Out Future Healthcare Workers

September 19, 2025

September 25 session features nurse educators and free ebook for registrants

BOSTON (September 19, 2025) — With only 15% of high school graduates ready for college-level STEM courses and 73% of college dropouts occurring in the first two years, the healthcare workforce crisis begins long before students enter nursing programs. Labster is addressing this pipeline problem with a free webinar featuring intervention strategies and a faculty guide for building STEM confidence in pre-nursing students struggling with prerequisite courses.

The stark reality: Less than 50% of STEM-intending students graduate with a STEM degree, according to the NCES. This means potential nurses are being lost in freshman biology and chemistry courses before they ever apply to nursing programs.

Webinar: Building STEM Confidence in Your Nursing & Health Science Students September 25, 2025, at 12:00 PM ET

The session will feature nurse educators Christine Vogel, MSN, RN, CHSE, CHSOS, and Ayla Roberts, MSN, RN, alongside Labster's Sarah Stahulak, who will share specific strategies for helping students overcome foundational science challenges in prerequisite courses that contribute to early attrition and prevent students from pursuing nursing careers.

All participants will receive "A Faculty Guide for Supporting At-Risk Nursing and Health Sciences Students," an ebook developed in collaboration with nursing faculty, retention specialists, and academic leaders.

"We are having this problem where we teach clinical patho to our nursing students, and we're expecting them to have this foundation of A&P, but overwhelmingly, about 85% do not have that baseline," notes one nursing program director featured in the guide.

The guide provides helpful strategies, outlining three "30-Minute Actions" that busy educators can take, including:

  • How to set up automatic warning systems to flag at-risk students
  • Hand-outs for campus support resources
  • Templates for student outreach
