Become an alchemist for the day! Conjure up the names of inorganic compounds and learn their applications. Can you unlock all 16 transmute structures?
University / College
Inorganic nomenclature is one of the key foundations required for many chemical careers, such as in analytical chemistry, cosmetics, and hygiene. In this simulation, you will apply the periodic table to accurately name monoatomic anions, cations, and binary compounds. Then, you will apply the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) rules for oxyanion naming to accumulate a catalog of oxyanion/acid structures.
Naming monoatomic ions
Familiarise yourself with the terminology: monoatomic, anion, cation, ionic, covalent, and binary compounds. Utilize the periodic table to begin constructing a recipe on how to name monoatomic anions and cations. Practice breaking up IUPAC names into their root and suffix.
Naming binary compounds
Build on the monoatomic ion naming recipe to name ionic, covalent, and binary acid compounds, accurately. Practice applying this recipe to name common inorganic compounds found at the beach!
Construct jigsaw models of oxyanions/acids
Construct oxyanions and oxyacids to visually learn the difference between the various IUPAC rules. Learn the basics of lewis structures and how VSEPR theory alters the geometry of oxyanions and their oxyacids.
Build a structure bank of oxyanions/acids
At the end, challenge your oxyanion knowledge by unlocking all 16 oxyanion and oxyacid structures in our ‘free play mode’. Transmute your completed models into their everyday applications!
